There has been quite a number of times assurances from Government that there is no need to worry about a rice shortages. Stock is ample and imports are coming in as usual from various countries and the Government warehouse is full of with stocks of rice grains in bags. There are three main reasons: Singapore’s relatively small import share diversification of sources and the ability to pay for rice at market prices. The policy is that Singapore will not put a price ceiling on rice and importer will not be able to buy rice on the global market for Singapore and no exporter will sell to them. But there will be a short-term price increase and despite the three assurances reported by national newspapers and over the media, many Singaporean continued their rush to buy up rice for stock. A check with the supermarkets found people who normally buy one bag of rice a month will buy an extra bag for safe-stock.
An average family uses about 10 kg of rice for three months. A housewife who was interviewed was not stocking as she claimed there was no point of buying so many bags of rice, it will just be eaten by weevils. Rice can keep for about three months before the weevils set in say importers. An evening media showed a housewife in Hong Kong buying five 10 kg bag for stocking as she mentioned that the increase is about 30% and she will not pay for the increase. I guessed for their weather the weevils will set in about 6 months as the weather is not humid in Hong Kong unlike Singapore.
The news front page flashed “HOARDING UNNECESSARY” there is sufficient rice to go around. It is not advisable to hoard. The more you hoard, the more prices will increase and you are artificially boosting demand and prices increase even more. I am not hoarding any extra rice to feed the weevils and let the weevils get to eat the rice first.
The same thing happened in Philippines, Thailand and Hong Kong, everyone is stocking rice in case they’re sold out and illegal traders will drive up prices. It is like war times when rice prices shoot up and only the rich can afford to hoard rice. Many efforts by the two governments have begun to stop hoarders and illegal traders driving prices up.
One of my colleagues stopped at supermarket to buy a bag of rice since she claimed that her rice container is empty but my guess is that she just wants to follow the crowd and stock some rice since everyone is doing the same thing. Sometime it happen to me as well when everyone is queuing for some popular snacks and everyone claimed that it is super delicious, I will also join the queue for a trial taste, just simply do not want to miss out the good taste. I think like everyone else I am afraid to lose out in life! But for the rice affairs, I did not stock for simple reason, our family of three in one roof do not eat that much grain of rice. We eat very little rice for dinner and most of the time, we eat noodles or bread as substitute. It’s time to change our lifestyles ideas management by eating fewer carbohydrates and more of protein and calcium which is a balance diet.
