This is the knowledge that exercise can lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, dementia, osteoporosis, gallstones, falls, erectile dysfunction, peripheral vascular disease and 12 kinds of cancer. Ms Marilyn Moffat, a professor of physical therapy at New York University and co-author with Carole B Lewis of Age-Defying fitness mentioned that regular moderate exercise increase your ability to battle the effects of disease. It has a positive effect on both physical and mental well-being. The goal is to do as much physical activity as your body lets you do and rest when you need to rest. A gradual exercise program increase the ability of the heart to pump oxygen and to pump nutrient rich blood more effective throughout the body. Exercise that builds gradually and protects inflamed joints can diminish pain, fatigue, morning stiffness, depression and anxiety and improve strength, walking speed and activity. The body benefits by exercising and breaking up sweat help the mind to overcome problem like depression and low self esteem.
We make it a point daily after work to walk to the nearest subway station (MRT) and this exercise takes about a steady gradual brisk walking of about 15- 20 minutes. We cross two traffic lights and an L shaped route that leads to the nearest subway, along there are many trees that gives very good shade. The brisk walk have been a great improvement on my health, I notice firmness on my abdomen and legs. Although the weather is humid and the whole body burst into perspiration, I never felt so good after reaching home.
After a refreshing bath, I could still be able to be awake reading the evening newspaper.
When it is time for sleep, the body just shut down easily without interruption I slept through until the morning. There are some changes in my body, as it is lighter and I feel very energetic and the feel good feeling when going to work. Never have I felt so alive after the one month’s brisk walking. I started to realize that over the weekends, my body actually aches for exercising.
