Lifestyles Ideas Management - What happens during a stroke?

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is block by a clot, narrowed by fatty deposits or has burst. When this happens, the part of the brain deprived of blood and oxygen starts to die leading to a loss of functions. At 43 this wife and mum fought for 12 years to regain the ability to think and communicate as well as the use of her limbs. She could not recognize or respond to relatives. Visitors were met with one of two responses: a blank stare or a hysterical giggle. Her children, two boys then aged 14 and 8 and a girl aged nine wept every day because they missed their mother. Her husband who is now in his 50s, the idea that he would lose his life companion was unbearable. Overnight, he was left with the multiple responsibilities of spending time with his wife at the hospital, taking care of the children and going to work. He remembers weeping profusely at the hospital’s cafĂ© which the waitress looked on, puzzled. “I told her my laksa dish was very hot and it had made me cry.” He said.

She began speech therapy, physiotherapy and psychiatric counseling. She had to relearn her ABC’s and simple arithmetic all over again. She could barely articulate words “yes” and “no”. Even when she uttered them it was often out of place. She would often cry out in frustration. She was unable to walk for a year and almost five years later, she found it difficult to construct sentences would say “yes” to everything.

12 years later, nobody can tell that she suffered a stroke except for a slight limp when she walks. When I think about my 18th floor neighbor that one time slim girl who suffered from a stroke, now should have been about 6 years ago. She still walks with difficulties and finds it difficult to speak one sentence. Her eyes tell me one thing: It is the physical suffering of losing the ability to walk normally and the loss of ability to communicate normally. Her self esteem is minus zero and I empathize my neighbor. Her elderly parents will have to struggle and look after her but what will happens if her parents are no longer with her?
