Cordyceps
Believed to benefit respiratory, glandular, and circulatory and immune systems. Similar to ginseng it is said to energies the body and help maintain proper blood viscosity. It increases levels of natural produced antioxidants.
Some people can have an allergic reaction to it. Pregnant or lactating women should consult their doctor before taking it. Usually used in combination with other herbs for soups. You can add a few sticks to chicken or fish porridge.
Ginger
Believed to aid digestion by increasing the production of digestive fluids and saliva. Its therapeutic properties stimulate blood circulation, removing toxins from the body and cleansing the bowels and kidneys. Ginger is believed to help break fevers by warming the body and increasing perspiration. There is no known side effect. To make ginger tea, add boiling water to ginger, honey and cinnamon. Or add to food or soups.
American Ginseng
Believed to lower cholesterol, increase energy levels, balance the metabolism and stimulate the immune system. It increases oxygenation of the cells and tissues stimulating the regeneration of damaged cells. The cooling and anti-flammatory properties found in wild American ginseng may also be used to help reduce fevers and relieve respiratory problems including dry coughing and wheezing. Korean ginseng is slightly more heaty.
Avoid drinking in a concentrated form daily. Your body could become too heaty, leading to sore throats or nose bleeds. Can be brewed into a tea or soup.
Red Dates
Believed to boost immunity as it contains phyto-isoflavin, an antioxidant.
There is no side effect and can be eaten raw. To make red date tea, put five to 10 dates in hot water and cover for 30 minutes before drinking.
Lingzhi
Believed to promote cell growth, blood circulation and overall immunity. It increases the amount of super-oxidant dehydrogenize which helps in eliminating free radicals in the body. Those who are allergic to it might get a rashness or dryness in the mouth.
Prepare as a tea by mixing two or three slices with red dates and wolfberry seeds. Cover for half an hour before drinking.
Green bean soup
Believed to counter excessive heatiness by cooling down the body.
It is also a plant source of protein. The phytochemicals in the beans are antioxidants that boost the immune system. Eating too much fiber can lead to constipation or diarrhea. So limit your intake to two or three servings a day. Boil green beans in hot water until they become soft. Add rock sugar, brown sugar or normal refined sugar to taste. You can also add sago pearls for smoother texture. Finish off with a drizzle of coconut milk.
